WELCOME TO LUNI

LUNI, which means the salt of the earth, or riverbed in Sanskrit, is keeping in line with the significance of its name.

Seelan Sundoo, accomplished South African chef and renowned restaurateur, opened the doors, which was endorsed by Mandala Mandela,  on the 25th May 2017, to a visual delight art gallery named Luni. They also appeared on the TV Expresso show.

Luni, which means salt of the earth, or riverbed in Sanskrit, is keeping in line with the significance of its name. Based in Salt River, Cape Town this creative space gives local and aspiring artists a nurturing space to display their art and grow alongside other talented creative’s, and provide customers and artists alike a beautiful environment to either interact with clients, enjoy a light meal, or a great cup of coffee at the charitable coffee bar, The Burrow, of which the proceeds go to abused women and children.

The selection of local artists will exhibit their work for a 4-6 week period, after which new artists will be brought into the gallery to keep the atmosphere fresh, and continue to give new talent a space to showcase their creative work.

The selection process is one, which is curated, and as Seelan says, “ I recognize new contemporary artists whom I think are up and coming, with a unique style and personality”.

Seelan, from a young age loved art, and would sit for hours drawing and painting.

“It allowed me to escape reality”. His dream was to always open a gallery but due to his family commitments and his restaurants taking centre stage, he was unable to realize this dream until now.

“I would like to expand this dream by opening more galleries extending along the Atlantic seaboard in the future.”
